
FREEDOM ROAD DANCE PROJECT
WORKSHOP PROPOSAL
The Freedom Road Dance Project is an inclusive dance company made up of dancers of all abilities. The troupe blends dancers with physical disabilities (Cerebral palsy, paraplegics, etc) and dancers without. The dance technique that is used has a wide variety of movements, gestures, that is accessible to wheel chair users or non wheel chair users. The music ranges from contemporary pop to classical. It is upbeat and motivational.
The goal of The Freedom Road Dance Project is to open up the doors for dance to ALL populations. Understanding that dance is about artistic expression with our bodies and should be available to everyone, regardless of physical difference.
Class Structure
A workshop class consists of the following:

a. A brief discussion on "What is dance", (concert dance, ritualistic, street dance, jazz dance, improvisation..etc)
"De-construct dance".
b. Warm up: The Freedom Road Core technique is used which is a Pilates based set of movements to mobilize, stretch
and strengthen the body.
c. Class participants create their own set of movements
d. Movements are put into a combination.
e. The combination is danced to different types of music, investigating how music effects emotions and mood.
f. Conclusion: a Mindfulness exercise is taught focusing on empowerment and positive thinking.
A typical class is 1 hour long, however for a large group 1 1/2 hours is suggested.

The Freedom Road Dance Troop is a group of 6 wheel chair dancers and 2 non wheel chair dancers, (2 without disabilities,
4 with disabilities) The dancers, under the direction of founder Anne Haight, have created a dance vocabulary that is fun and versatile.
At this time a weekly class is being held at Operation Life in Long Branch, NJ every Thursday 4:30-5:30. The class is sponsored by MOCEANS, Monmouth and Ocean County Center for Independent living (https://www.moceanscil.org) and is coordinated by Stanley Soden) All are welcome to join in. The Freedom Road Dance Project is the brainchild of Anne Haight (See résumé)
She has danced professionally all over the globe and is the founder of Freedom Road Pilates (Larchmont, NY and Long Branch, NJ) She has worked with populations of varied disabilities throughout her life, as a gymnastic coach, a baseball coach, teaching "wheel chair pilates"..
Anne blends her vast knowledge of the body, joy of movement, love and support into each class.
